Supplements — miracle pills or pointless capsules?

Supplements. The word alone stirs up feelings. And there has been a good deal of heated debate on the subject lately.

Some swear by their daily vitamins and protein shakes, others shrug and say “ordinary food is enough”. But what is actually true — and for whom?

Perspective 1: “I take everything — just in case!”

This is the group with a whole bathroom cabinet of jars, capsules and powders. A multivitamin at breakfast, magnesium in the evening, and perhaps extra vitamin D through the winter. The argument? “You never know what you are missing.”

Advantage:\nYou minimise the risk of deficiencies — particularly if your diet excludes certain foods.

Disadvantage:\nIt can get expensive, and with some substances you really can have too much of a good thing. More is not always better.

Perspective 2: “I eat a varied diet — that is enough!”

Here we find the advocates of food before pills. They trust that a balanced diet gives the body everything it needs. And for the great majority, that is true.

Advantage:\nYou get nutrients in their natural form, together with fibre, antioxidants and other good things.

Disadvantage:\nSome groups (vegans, older people or those who are pregnant, for example) may still need supplements such as B12, vitamin D or folic acid.

Perspective 3: “I take supplements when I need them — and I know why!”

This group has done their research, perhaps had blood tests, and know exactly what they need to top up. They use supplements as a tool, not as a lifestyle.

Advantage:\nYou get help tailored to your own needs.

Disadvantage:\nIt takes a little more commitment — and sometimes expert advice.

What does the research say?

The research is clear: for many people, a varied, nutritious diet is enough. But there are several occasions when supplements are both sensible and necessary — particularly in the Nordics, where the sun is notably absent through the winter (hello, vitamin D).

A health coach’s conclusion

Supplements are neither magical nor pointless — they are a tool. Used well they can make a great difference, but they can never replace a healthy lifestyle. So before you fill your basket with new jars: think about what you in particular need, and do not be afraid to ask for advice.
